Obsession and Addiction

Now I am obsessed with coffee, and it is a kind of addiction. The obsession came from my American lifestyle.

I seldom drank coffee when I was in Japan. Though some coffee shops like Starbucks were getting more popular, I didn’t go there. They were always crowded and expensive, so I was not interested in drinking coffee. However, since I came to the U.S., my habit has totally changed. I need coffee every morning. It helps me to wake up.

Why did I change? One reason is that there are a lot of coffee shops in the U.S. where I can buy a cup of coffee for only a dollar. A dollar has made me obsessive. In Japan, people usually have to pay three to four dollars to get a small cup of coffee. Or, people have a choice of buying canned iced coffee – a kind of sugar coffee flavored water. Neither fascinated me. If I had stayed in Japan, I would not have become an obsessive about coffee.

I know caffeine causes addiction, and it might not be good for my health. However, the American style – we can find inexpensive coffee shops every two or three blocks on the street – gave me a new view. The fact is that I have become a coffee lover.
