Am I in America?
Before I came to America, I thought I could study English in an English environment. The first time I saw some Chinese on a street in San Francisco, I was so excited. Wow! I still can see my people in America! After a couple of weeks, I was confused. I saw Chinese everywhere everyday! In the grocery store, laundromat, bank, restaurant, library. I heard people speak Chinese all the time. Am I in America? How can I improve my English fast in this kind of environment? I asked myself.
Since the Gold Rush, Chinese have come to San Francisco. More Chinese have come here these decades. Like me, they came here to see the great country and study American English. I am one of a number of Chinese here!
There are many ways I can improve my English: Take English classes, talk to native speakers, listen to the radio, watch TV, read English books and newspapers, and surf internet websites.
I'm now studying at the San Francisco Institute of English. I've learned a lot in my class.
