Obsession
As every other teenage girl, I was obsessed with an American boy band called “new kids on the block” in the 1980s. They were the only people that were important in my life at that time. I would collect information, basically anything about them. I had pictures of them; I watched their videos; I read about them; I listened to their songs all the time; I talked about them with my friends; I even told my baby sister all about them. I had a crush on one of them for a long time.
Now I think it wasn’t that I was wasting my time on them, but I was learning, thanks to the “new kids on the block.” The band was American, and they talked and sang in English, but I am Mongolian and didn’t speak any English the. Just to understand them better, I started to learn English. I would listen to their songs and write them down. Then I translated the lyrics. I watched their videos with my English dictionary in my hands.
After some time, I grew out of my obsession, but I’m not out of learning English. The band boys gave me an enormous interest in the English language, and I am thankful for that. Now, when I hear the name “new kids of the block” I remember the little girl who was totally obsessed with them.
